Your BaZi chart — also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is a cosmic map of your birth moment. At first glance, it looks like a grid of unfamiliar Chinese characters and symbols. But once you understand the structure, reading your BaZi chart becomes an illuminating practice of self-discovery. This guide walks you through every part of the chart, step by step.
If you are completely new to BaZi, we recommend reading What Is BaZi? The Four Pillars of Destiny Explained first for essential context.
A BaZi chart is arranged in four columns (pillars), each containing two rows — a Heavenly Stem (top) and an Earthly Branch (bottom). The four pillars represent different time units of your birth:
| Pillar | Represents | What It Governs |
|---|---|---|
| Year Pillar | Birth year | Ancestry, childhood, external environment |
| Month Pillar | Birth month | Parents, career, early adulthood |
| Day Pillar | Birth day | Self, spouse, core identity |
| Hour Pillar | Birth hour | Children, legacy, inner world |
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — the top character of the third column. This is you. It represents your core self, personality, and natural tendencies. There are 10 possible Day Masters: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, and Yin Water.

Each Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch carries one or more of the Five Elements. Count how many times each element — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — appears across all eight positions (4 stems + 4 branches). This gives you your element distribution.
| Element | Too Little (Weak) | Balanced | Too Much (Strong) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Indecisive, lacks direction | Creative, compassionate, growth-minded | Stubborn, overbearing |
| Fire | Shy, low confidence | Charismatic, warm, expressive | Impulsive, restless, anxious |
| Earth | Unstable, scattered | Reliable, nurturing, grounded | Worrisome, slow to adapt |
| Metal | Lacks boundaries | Disciplined, principled, sharp | Rigid, cold, overly critical |
| Water | Rigid thinking | Wise, intuitive, adaptable | Overthinking, escapist |
Read Five Elements Personality for a complete breakdown of each element's traits.
This is the most critical reading skill. A strong Day Master has ample support from the same element or its generating element (e.g., a Wood Day Master surrounded by Water and Wood). A weak Day Master lacks support and may be overwhelmed by controlling elements. Your ideal balance dictates which elements are favorable (useful) and which are unfavorable (harmful) for you.
Rule of thumb: A strong Day Master needs to be controlled or weakened (Metal or Fire for Wood types). A weak Day Master needs to be supported or strengthened (Water or Wood for Wood types).
The four Heavenly Stems sit on the top row of each pillar. They represent the visible, conscious forces in your life — what people see, how you act, and your outward expression. Look for special Stem combinations known as Heavenly Stem Combinations (天干合), which indicate transformative energies or significant relationships.
The four Earthly Branches on the bottom row are your hidden, subconscious terrain. Each Branch contains Hidden Stems — usually 1 to 3 sub-elements that reveal deeper layers of your personality. For example, the Rat (子) contains only Yang Water, while the Dragon (辰) contains Yang Earth, Yin Wood, and Yin Water.
Branches also form special relationships:
Beyond the fixed Four Pillars, your BaZi chart includes 10-Year Luck Cycles — rolling pillars that change approximately every decade. Your current Luck Pillar colors the opportunities and challenges of your present life phase. A favorable Luck Pillar can turn a difficult fixed chart into a golden decade; an unfavorable one can suppress even a strong natal chart.

Once you grasp the chart's structural meaning, you can apply it to specific domains:
| Aspect | BaZi Chart | Western Natal Chart |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Five Elements + Yin-Yang | Planets + Zodiac signs |
| Components | 8 characters (4 stems + 4 branches) | 10+ planets in 12 houses |
| Time sensitivity | 2-hour blocks for hour pillar | Minutes matter for ascendant |
| Dynamic layer | 10-Year Luck Cycles | Transits + Progressions |
| Best for | Life timing, element balance, destiny | Psychological profile, immediate transits |
